was able to do a word search that would allow me to find
any document or text within a document containing the
criteria being searched for. since i upgraded from office
97 to 2000 does not work.

Try using Windows Explorer. Click "START", "Search", "For files and
folders". In the "Named" box, type "*.doc" (all Word documents). In the
"Containing text" box, type "your text".

Click "Search now".

This might be slightly different depending on the version of Windows you
have.

Does the person want to find it or just keep looking all day and not getting
any work done? Sorry, couldn't help! Not sure if 2000 has this feature,
but if you click the "Open" dialog box, is there a "Tools" dropdown arrow on
the dialog box menu? If so, click it then click the "Advanced" TAB.

Hey Bill,

Close, it goes like this in 2000:

From within Word, click on File, Open, Tools, Find, change
the Property box to Contents, enter the value of the words
you're searching for and then click on Add to List.
Finally click on the Find Now button and the dialog box
will now contain all files that meet your search criteria.

Thanks for teaching me something I didn't know before and
am glad I do now.

Thanks! Most places I have done work for (including myself) stuck with
Office 97 until upgrading to Office XP! Of course I'm so used to using
Windows Explorer that I never use Word for any sort of file management.

Take care!

Ya - every time I do that Word 97 says it has encountered a problem & either makes a report & sends to Microsoft or shuts down. Looks like Microsoft can't be compatible with itself
All I'm trying to do is search converted document files from Word 5.5 to Word 97 useing WordPort Conversion Software. XP Search Engine doesn't even recognize these files!! "Effective File Search" (Shareware) seeems to work well!!
Any comments??

To be honest with you, I have never used any search utilities because
Windows has all that I need to search files by date, name, included text,
etc. SORRY! I would be more than happy to assist this person in using
these built in features to search for documents. Are you trying to replace
existing text in a bunch of documents at one time? If so, there is a little
macro designed for Word that will do a "Batch Find and Replace" of Word
documents in a specified folder. Holler back and I'll point you that way.

For me, Windows' built-in Search feature doesn't find all the Word
files that have a certain phrase in them. I would guess that it's
because Word files are not plain text.

But when I search from inside Word, there's no way to search for a
phrase (that I can see). So, I get way too many results.

This is so frustrating!!!!!!

Of course you can search for a phrase! Just type it into the "Find what" box
in the Find dialog.
