Hi,

I accidentally nuked a 300GB drive last night by deleting everything
from the root directory down. (doh!) I imagine most of the data is
recoverable as it is the second drive in my PC and I have not written
anything to it since. However all of the recovery programs I have
tried require you to restore the erased files to a different
partition, this is a bit of a problem because the other drive in the
system is only 40GB. Does anyone know of any recovery software that
can rebuild /restore the original directory structure "in-situ" so I
don't have to use a secondary drive? The filesystem type is NTFS.

Thanks for any advice

Hi, Niall.

Would Norton's old faithful Unerase work? It doesn't copy recovered files
anywhere; it just restores (with your help) the deleted first character of
the filename and then rebuilds the cluster chain. At least, that's how it
worked in FAT; I don't know much about NTFS.

I used R-Studio (www.r-tt.com) last month to recover files from a 25 GB NTFS
volume that Chkdsk couldn't read or fix. But it did, as you say, have me
put the recovered data onto a separate volume and complete the recovery from
there. I did not explore the program further to see if it would do what you
need. Did you actually have more than 40 GB of data on your 300 GB volume?

Only you can decide how much time, effort and money your lost files are
worth. Would it be enough for you to buy a second 300 GB drive and recover
your data to that?

I've rebuilt my share of Directories and FATs using Norton's DiskEdit, but
that was back in the days when 20 MB was a HUGE drive. I suppose 300 GB
would take 15,000 times as long, even if I had the tools and knew how to use
them. :>(

No. If the data is important, try www.drivesavers.com.
