My Windows XP is not able to do SEARCH anymore

I am referring to the SEARCH BUTTON that allows you to
do search for files.

Hii can u elobrate a bit u dont see a search link in the startmenu ? or u
cant get access to it at all (even by using hotkey "F3" ???)

Holy crap dude you have one violent virus. I had the same one a couple
months back. At this point, you have 2 options: beat the living piss
out of the virus with AVG Free or Trend Micro PC-Cillin (google search
them, avg is free and trend micro does an online scan), and also google
for the F-Secure Blacklight scanner. Also, download HijackThis and
click Scan and save log and copy/paste the contents of that log here.

Oh, and for the second option, the one I took, reinstall Windows
WITHOUT reformatting (this is called upgrading, and the Windows setup
process allows you to chose this option), and this reinstalls all of
the Windows files. You may lose a bunch of data, so back up all of the
contents of My Documents, including My Pictures and My Videos. If you
have any large programs, like games or developing programs, just use
their install disks again to install them. This is a drastic measure,
but hey, that virus is one of drastic destruction, so weigh the
differences and see what is best for you. But first, scan the crap out
of your computer and get rid of all viruses that you find. Oh, and dont
use ANY peer-to-peer programs, it exposes you to some of the worst
viruses.

See 'Why doesn't Search work?'

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and
select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the i386 folder. (This fix will require
you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View
tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\inf
to open directly to the inf folder.

Hii check up with these:

Error: "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You
may need to run setup".

The file that is missing, or corrupt, is one of two. BAR.XSL or BALLOON.XSL
(and/or other files in the same folder), depending on your search
preferences. These files are both normally located in the
Windows\srchasst\mui\0409 folder on your hard drive. These files may be
locally cached in the Temporary Internet Files, so this may explain why some
users have this problem "intermittently". Re-installing srchasst.inf works
here as well.

Windows XP Search Companion Does Not Work Because of File Corruption
(Downloadable Fix)

The problem stems from Search Assistant being unable to connect to
http://sa.windows.com. This can be caused by proxy servers, firewalls and
some "ad blocking" software.

Thank you very much. I believe it was the virus which my friends could not
get rid off.
I will remember to let you know how it goes

Thanks Umesh. Yes nothing works, even the F3, but I will try
the solution suggested by sgtdisturbed. I suspected that has to
do witha bad virus.
