Search Windows Don't Work

This is making me crazy. I use Internet Explorer 6, and
Windows 98SE. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, I cannot
use any search window no matter what web page I am on.
For the most part, everything else seems to work, but I
do see hints of other problems. Occasionally, an image
or page won't load until I have refreshed several times.
Sometimes other links won't load, but the most obvious
problem is any search window. I type in the search
parameter, click the activation button and get nothing,
zilch. It is as if I did nothing at all. I am up to
date on Windows critical updates and Norton anti-virus.
Norton has not detected any viruses. I have tried
reloading Windows and IE6, to no avail. Any help or
insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.
