I just purchased a notebook computer preloaded with Win XP Pro. When I click
Start - Search the seach window does not appear. However, if I go into
Windows Explorer and click the Search icon there I do get a search window.
When I call he notebook manufacturer they tell me that I should just
re-install the entire operting system. Is there another way to solve this
problem other than restoring the entire operating system. I have loaded an
awfull lot of software on this computer already and do not want to have to go
throught this again.

Thanks for the tip. I saw in another area that someone else was having the
same problem. I saw this similar suggestion. I have yet to try it out because
I have been having a number of other problems associated with IE 6. But I
will tackle this problem first.

Because I was having so many problems with IE and so many of the tools within
XP I decided to restore the OS. As a result all of the problems that I was
experiencing earlier are now gone. XP SP2 is a not a good SP at all. It is
causing more problems than it fixes. MS really needs to address this issue. I
have never experienced SP problems this catastrophic in all the years I have
used MS.

Needless to say until Longhorn comes out I will not be downloading any SP's
for XP.

When is Longhorn due for release? I hope not too soon as I have just
progressed onto Win XP.

I presume Longhorn will be the 64 bit OS. Can XP also cope with 64 bit
computing? I know 64 bit Athlon chips are out there. But what about the
software? Dig into your pockets boys for all that new 64-bit software and
hardware not to mention conware!!!

I'll take my time. I am in no rush into crashing twice as fast in 64 bits at
a time.
