search utility can not find files containing text

filename.1 contains the phrase "d2a". A search for files
which contain the phrase d2a yields "no files found" .
Why does this not work?

Two workarounds.

1. Use a different search tool. I like Agent Ransack from
http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/.

2. Modify the behavior in XP (requires SP1) -
