I have some graphics files (.smp) and when I do a search, nothing comes up.
I know they are there because I can navigate to them and there are a lot of
them in one folder. Why won't Vista Search find them?

Thanks

Vista makes doing a simple search very difficult. Open search... click
Advanced Search... for Location choose your drive... and finally you can
search for your files. Oh yea... don't forget to click "Include non-indexed,
hidden, and system files (might be slow)
Kind of a pain in the butt.

Hi,

Read Dan's answer. Why not include the indexer? It's what makes searching
fast (and the perception that it slows the system is quite incorrect).

Thanks DanR for you quick reply, but that didn't work either. LOL I liked
Vista until this happened. If you can't search easily for anything you might
as well not ever save anything to the hard drive again. I certainly don't
like this at all.

Hi Rick, yes, I did include the Indexer this time and still came up empty. I
clicked on Start and then typed in *.smp on the Search bar that's on the
Start button, but it doesn't give you any information as to exactly WHERE it
is located on the computer. It just finds the files. If that search can
find the files, then why can't the Right click search work?

When I do that and move the cursor over an item, the path is displayed.

Cheers, Dave

Try searching as you did in XP.
by searching in Explorer
Bring up Explorer. (Windows Key + E
Right click on Computer (left pane)
Select Search (second listed item on my computer)
In the search textbox (upper right)
type in *.smp viola!

Hi Larry,

You can't just suddenly include the indexer without letting it run and index
the system, it usually takes a few days. Make sure to to include directories
outside the user profile.

Thank you Rich. Now THAT'S what a search should result in. Why in Heaven's
name did Microsoft Vista make it so difficult?

I guess I'm going to have to get a book and read up on this OS. Any
recommendations?

DoubleDAZ, when I hover my cursor over the search results from the Start
Button, I don't get the path to the file. But thanks for trying to help.

And thanks to everyone else who offered their sage advice.

A few days? How large is your index? I'm only looking at some 13K
items, but it manages to reindex in under an hour if I'm using the PC.

Hi,

Depends on the user, I let it do the entire system, lock, stock, and barrel.
A new install will usually take 24-48 hours at a minimum. If you expand the
index parameters to include all drives, file types, and content, it could be
much, much, longer.
