I cannot search from the START button, nor does clicking on "search" at the
c drive (or any drive) work. The dialog box does pop up.

From explorer I can click the tool SEARCH and the dialog box does show up.
Exactly like the one that you normally see from the START button but it is
in the explorer.

I googled up and reinstalled srchasst as explained in a number of microsoft
articles.
I searched thru the registery for "SearchHidden" a key that is supposed to
be there. It wasnt anywhere so I went to another computer like mine, found
about 15 or so items under some explorer key that looked like I should have
them, wrote them out a a .reg file and install them. Nothing doing. Then I
did a repair install of XP. Still didnt do any good.

The only think I can think of is that something went wrong when I did an
unintall of office 2000 and removed a bunch of assistances (rocky,
paperclip, etc). I did a restore using that XP system restore option but
somewhere along the way I lost the search.

A repair of xp should have worked???? What else can I do other than
reinstall xp? This system is not on the internet and I had to call in the
45 digit number twice already.

Search - Doesn't Work

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf
file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files
from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer
Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also
click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf
folder.
