search has died in XP

All the search functions on my xp box have died - I tried the
suggested reinstall of srchasst.inf, and even installed sp2 - I get
the dog/asst sitting on a blank box.

I looked at the regestry keys, but they seem to be pointing to the
correct places. For example my HKCU/software/microsoft/IE/main/search
page key is http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch

I had the google toolbar installed, but removed it before installing
SP2.

As well, I can't get to yahoo, google, or most importantly the
microsoft online support - though I can through firefox, which is how
I'm writing this.

I get "Page cannot be displayed" errors, with "Invalid Syntax Error"
in the title for "http://www.yahoo.com/", for example, as with google.

Something has become corrupted somewhere, or I have a virus, I've run
Ad-aware, HijackThis and SpyBot to no avail.

Suggestions very welcome.

Keith HKCU is spyware and should be deleted. I had this on my computor and
could not discover where it came from, mine was in the add and remove
programes and deleted it from there. jim

HKCU is my shorthand for Hot Key Current User. - Sorry, but I'm not deleting it. ;-}
