After downloading the SP2 and installing from Windows
Update, a program needed to do any search functions in
Windows XP or in IE is missing. The error message says I
may need to run Setup. What? How? Why is this happening?

What most likely is missing or corrupt are the files bar.xsl, lclsrch.xml and/or
balloon.xsl.
Clean out your temporary internet files and then try reinstalling Srchasst.inf.
Reinstalling Search Companion
.. Locate the file "srchasst.inf"
.. Click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\inf to open directly to the inf folder
The default location is C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf
.. Once you locate the file, right click and click install.
.. Browse to the "I386" folder on your XP CD.

Then presumably you have recovery disks or a recovery partition - perhaps contact the
manufacturer or the people you purchased the computer from for advice regarding CDs.
