Search feature & other features missing

This may be a question for the virus/security NG, but some Windows features
are affected. I had a computer man working on my computer today because it
seemed I had a recurring virus that affected a genealogy program. I have
WinXP-SP2. I was using Grisoft AVG. I had put a lot of its detected
viruses in its Virus Vault. The computer man in trying to clean up the
computer deleted those things plus some other things he thought were
viruses. He tried to download something online and that wouldn't work. (So
I've also posted to the I.E. NG, hope that's OK). I forget all the steps he
was doing, but finally decided it would be best to use System Restore and
that wouldn't open. The Search feature page would open, but there was no
text. There may be other things affected, I'm not sure. He thinks in
deleting things, he may have inadvertently deleted a needed Windows file.
Any suggestions? I would hate to have to format the hard drive, I have SO
many programs, and SO much data! To say nothing of a huge amount of O.E.
e-mails with valuable information in them.

Joy, check at Kelly's http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Select S and scroll to Search don't work. I would
look into finding a new computer guy. If you find out that other things
were affected you may be forced to do a clean install.
You can save all your e-mails and important data to a cd if you have a
cd burner. Your emails can be found in
C:\Document and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\Microsoft\Outlook or Outlook Express. Just copy that
complete folder to a CD.
