I have a user that insists he cannot click "search" since being switched to
Windows XP. I cannot find any information on the net or this site. I suspect
it may be a corrupt user profile but he says another user gets the same
problem. No error message that I'm aware of, just the window pops up and then
closes. Any thoughts?

Not much information to go on, but nonetheless -

Try removing 3rd party browser extensions (in IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Browsing,
“uncheck†Enable Third Party Browser Extensions, then run a system file scan, (SFC) and
re-registered these dll files.

Click Start, Run, then type in: (pressing Enter after each one)
regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shell32
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll

You may also need to:
Click Start, Run, then type in: regsvr32 /i C:\windows\srchasst\srchui.dll
Press Enter

If the above fails to fix the problem, then consider the following links for more information:-

Reinstalling search:

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

Reinstalling the Search companion

1. Login as administrator
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted
for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or point to
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder (if you've applied a ServicePack)
which-ever has the updated system files.

Found resolution in Microsoft's Knowledgebase Article # 309173 -- As it turns
out XP does not search "all content" as previous versions of Windows did.
The KB309173 refers to modifications of the registry as instructed. This
tested okay for me but please do NOT edit the registry if you do not have a
backup.

Thanks for all your suggestions!
