Search doesn't find text that is present

I have a string of text in the "Main Document" and did a Find on it.
None of the checkboxes under "More" are checked. In fact, it doesn't
seem to matter what I search for (even the word "and", which is also
present) -- Word just doesn't find it.

Any ideas as to what might cause this?

I forgot to mention that I'm using Office 2003.

Hi Paul,

Did you also go through all of the items on the Format button to make sure
that nothing is set and that none of the checkboxes contain a check mark?

You can clear the search formatting options by pressing doing the following.
1. Press Alt+F11.
2. In the Visual Basic Editor, press Ctrl+G.
3. In the Immediate pane, type (or copy/paste) the following line:
Selection.Find.ClearFormatting
4. Press Enter.

I didn't go thru them all, but I don't normally search for formattted
text. My experience with the Search window is that any formatting
being searched for is itemized under the Find What field.

The problem did go away when I shut down all my Word files and
reopened the Word file of interest.

Even though the problem went away, it makes me wonder about past times
when I go through a slew of different documents on different folders
of different network drives looking for stuff. The files came up in a
Windows Explorer search for phrases within a file. Trying to find the
phrase upon opening the file did not succeed. Perhaps the text was
there, but Word was in this weird mode. Therefore, if I can avoid it
again, I will do so.

Will keep your suggestions in mind for next time. Like I said,
however, I don't normally search for formatted text.
