What I want to do is search for a folder rather than the
9,342 files that contain the same string in their
filenames. Use to be that you if entered nothing you got
nothing, and you could add wildcards (*,?) if you wanted
more. So "FolderName. " would only find folders and
files with no extension. XP has introduced a kind of
implied * wildcard before and after your search string
which is OK when that's what you want, but how can I turn
it off?

The answer is in you post.

Search for name windows only (with the quotes)

"windows"
