So, in the near future, I'll only have to avoid a single hard drive
brand instead of two? That'll simplify things.

I have 3 Maxtors and a Seagate in my system. Never had any problem
with any of them and 2 of the maxtors are almost 5 years old.

Also my Seagate drive came with a 5 year Warranty.

Dunno. I've found Seagates recent offerings to be reliable.

Modern drives don't last that long. The workmanship has deteriorated
dramatically since everything is being assembled in the Far East and India.

The old drives you have will last forever an you will only change them when you
have run out of space otherwise they won't go wrong at all. My experience is
the same but new HP machines comes with rubbish drives.

Well the Seagate drive was just purchased about 6 months ago is all.
So evidently Seagate thinks their modern drives are very reliable
since they included a 5 year warranty with it.
