Script error messages when using IE help menu

I keep getting script errors when I go to the help menu in XP IE.

I get messages like:

an error has occurred in the script on this page
line 2
char 1
error invalid character
code 0
url mk:@msit store: c:\windows\help\iexplorechm:/iegetsrt.htm

If I proceed or not, the error msg clears and the help menu comes up. If I
select an item on the help menu, a similar script error appears, and it gets
cleared the same way. So, I can use the help menu, but I get a bunch of
script errors that need to be cleared in the process.

I don't have any viruses. My home page has never been hijacked, and all the
help menus in other applications work fine. I run Spybot and Adaware
regularly without incident. I have recently installed ms office xp 2002 and
sp2.

I see there have been other users with similar issues, can anyone help

Hi homepc :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Script Debugging Problem

Open IE
Tools | Advanced
Under Browings:
Disable Script Debugging - Check it
Display a notification about every script error - Uncheck it
Apply
OK

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

I read the article regarding Secunia Advisory SA12192

I have been getting regular automatic service patches installed during the
summer. I wonder if my pc already has this patch? When I go to updates, MS
says I am up to date already.

The download site for the patch does not list IE6 with service pack 2
installed. Wouldn't service pack 2 have this patch included? If not, which
patch would be safe for me to use?

1. You might want to refresh your scripting engine:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/nhp/default.asp?contentid=28001169
or
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

Sometimes there's a corrupt file in the cache and one must go to Tools |
Internet Options and click Delete Files.

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

(WinXP users who have problems with 2a and 2b, see
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm)

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

4. See also

Installing Office 2003

5a. IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing>Enable third-party browser
extensions (uncheck & reboot).

5b. Find the hijacker that caused 5a to be checked (or if none were checked,
check for hijackware anyway):

Hi homepc :-)

Yes, if you have updated to SP2, then you should have the proper patch
included. In view of this, be sure that you have the proper Java installed.
Follow the script engine update and other information that Frank has posted
see if that helps to resolve the problem.

Hope this helps

I was dealing with an MS SP2 help operator yesterday, trying to sort out my
script problem. His supervisor concluded that my IE6 program had become
corrupted. I have to backup my registry, uninstall IE6 and then reinstall
it. My problem only appears when I use the IE6 help menu. If I access the
same IE6 help menu via Windows Explorer file manager (help folder) no script
errors appear.

Hi homepc :-)
I was dealing with an MS SP2 help operator yesterday, trying to sort out my
script problem. His supervisor concluded that my IE6 program had become
corrupted. I have to backup my registry, uninstall IE6 and then reinstall
it. My problem only appears when I use the IE6 help menu. If I access the
same IE6 help menu via Windows Explorer file manager (help folder) no script
errors appear.

I have a suggestion you might try before doing the repair/reinstall. I am
just thinking that, if you can access the Help from the Windows Explorer, it
may be that your IE Help file is somehow damaged or corrupted. Perhaps you
can extract a new copy of it from the install CD and replace it. If you are
able to find it through the Windows Explorer, then you can make a note of
the path for replacing it during the extraction, rename it, and replace it
with the new file.

This may not work at all, but, I just thought it might be worth a try first
before doing the repair/reinstall and all that goes with it.

Here are the instructions for how to extract the file. Just put it in the
folder where you found the Help file.

You want to extract a file in Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP
http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001011114021106

If it does not work, then if you need the instructions on how to do the
repair/reinstall then post back and we'll post them here for you.

Hope this helps

Well, I finally was able to fix that script error

I ran HijackThis v1.98.2

and fixed the following item:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

That appears to have corrected my script errors.

There is another item that appears in HijackThis and I don't know if I
should delete it or not:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A3FDD654-A057-4971-9844-4ED8E67DBBB8} - (no file)

Any suggestions?

Giant AntiSpyware was the only thing I found to completely get rid of
Sidefind. You can download it for free, and use it for free for 15
days. I loved this program so much that I bought it, and that is
saying a lot because I am not one to usually buy programs. Here is
the link to Giant AntiSpyware. http://www.giantcompany.com?PID=A23392
Copy and paste it if it doesn't show up as a link in this message.
Adaware will NOT get rid of Sidefind as some people state it does.
Nor do a lot of other programs, and it's next to impossible to get rid
of all the files on your own. I tried everything on my own to get rid
of Sindfind. I got rid of some of it, but that evil little sfbho.dll
file would not die for anything. Download Giant AntiSpyware. The
program does everything for you and restores anything you deleted by
mistake that you shouldn't have. It's very easy to use. I can't
recommend it enough to get rid of Sidefind and other spyware programs.
