Scribus
http://www.scribus.net/

Scribus brings award-winning professional page layout
to Linux/Unix, MacOSX and Windows desktops with
a combination of "press-ready" output and new
approaches to page layout.

Underneath the modern and user friendly interface,
Scribus supports professional publishing features,
such as CMYK color, separations, ICC color
management and versatile PDF creation. Scribus
was the first DTP application on the planet to
directly support PDF/X-3 output, a rigorous
ISO standard. Scribus did so by almost a year.
Other features include PDF Import, EPS
import/export, Unicode text including right to
left scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew.

I've been using this for several months now. Mostly on Winderz, a few
times on Linux. It is a very compelling desktop publisher. Especially
if you're interested in cross-platform solutions, check it out.

It works on 9x/Me windows systems?

I can't get it to import PDF
Dude;

PDF is designed so that you /can't/ import it into text editors, desktop
publishers et al. Try searching groups.google.com on "edit pdf files"
or somesuch.

What, did I read something wrong? looks as if they claim the product
can do this to me.

Importing PDF

One other way you can import files into Scribus is via PDF. Scribus
will use Ghostscript to create a high resolution image with a lower
resolution file for preview on screen. This is more appropriate for
drawings and images versus text. If you need just the text from a
PDF, you can open in Adobe Acrobat Reader or KPDF and copy and paste
from the clipboard. Note: you can only import one page of a PDF at a
time, and you cannot yet edit imported PDFs nor can you edit PDFs
created with another application.

-Craig
