My screen saver will not come on. I can get it up by doing a preview but it
will not come on by it's self after the specified time of 5 min. I have tried
changing the time but that had no effect. I thought I might have something
that was hiden running but if that was the case I would think the preview
funtion would not work either. Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have a wireless mouse or keyboard? Their sending
requests/signals back and forth can register as activity in some cases.

I had a wireless that quit working and replaced it with a microsoft wireless
system. I don't recall if the problem started then or not but it could have.
If this is the problem is there any solution to it?

Not really. Wireless devices continually poll the computer for
connectivity. Screensavers are unnecessary unless you are in an area
where you need to keep your work private when you step away from the
computer. In that case, just lock your computer.

In Windows-98SE I remember to have seen with System Monitor that
Screensavers eat up resources, especially CPU. Does it happen with XP
also? In any case, I think your advice "Screensavers are unnecessary"
is very good. And thank you for the link

XP is much better about managing resources than Win98 was. Screensavers
were originally invented to prevent burn-in on the old CRT monitors.
This is not an issue on modern CRT's, although I have heard of image
ghosting happening on LCD's. You would need to leave the image on the
LCD for a very long time, though. A better solution is to set your
monitor to blank or turn off after a set amount of time.

Of course, a graphically-intense screensaver does take processing power
and if you are running a processor-intensive program you wouldn't want
your screensaver to kick in during the operation.

Elsewhere in this posting I found that someone had said the wireless mouse
stops the screensaver working. I now remove mouse's USB toggle when I leave
the pc and sure enough the screensaver works perfectly. The hoops I've
jumped thru to try and get it to work don't bear thinking about. I had
something called Magentic from Incredimail ( screensaver that thows all your
photos onto the screen as a s/saver, wallpaper too) which used to work fine,
and I kept contacting them, they had me do all sorts of diagnostic tests and
send them back, and they couldn't find the problem. I have e mailed them to
tell them about this wireless mouse thing - especially Microsoft wireless
mouses (mice!?). I did have another brand of wireless mouse and screensaver
worked fine with that. Can't believe that it's something so simple. Maybe
not so easy if you have wireless keyboard too, but sure as hell, that's the
problem. You would think Microsoft would do something about it,
notwithstanding the article that some people are advising to look at - I
haven't looked at it, can't be doing with any more techno-babble - not
terribly techy minded anyway. I do wonder how these people keep their jobs
actually as on another matter entirely, I spent an hour talking to Orange
yesterday to try and find out how to e mail from my mobile phone - they
couldn't help me, but within 10 mins of hanging up, I'd managed to sort it
out myself!!! Technical Support my a**e!!!

Happy surfing
