Screen resolution

I have a HP Pavilion 7950, which shipped with Windows ME. This OS drove me
nuts. I ran it with Linux for awhile, then with XP Pro, which I now use.

The display adapter is Nvidia Riva TNT2. XP will not deliver a screen
resolution higher than 800 x 600 with XP, though both Win ME and several
Linux distros obtained better a resolution with the same hardware. I suppose
this is a driver problem. Has anyone solved it? (I'm not going to dump XP
because of this shortcoming alone, but getting the right driver would be
easier than getting new hardware. I hope.)

Have you tried going to HP's website and downloading the
XP driver for your video card?

It turned out to be easier than I expected. The monitor, which is generic,
was not detected by the setup; it was actually set at 85 Hz,
although it will not do more than 60 Hz at 1024x768. If the setup
can't detect your monitor, it will apparently not prompt you for
the refresh rate; it is your responsibility to know the
capabilities of such a monitor.
