I have been experiencing irregular, but ever increasing
incidents of XP windows locking up that required manual
power-down.

On powering backup (usually after the automatic FAT
consistency check), sometimes it locks up again in a
very short time; other times it could run for hours.

I couldn't find any help in the Microsoft support webpage.
Can someone suggest what's the most likely source of this
kind of irratic lock-up, and how to fix it (permanently)
I hope.

You may be experiencing a incompatibility problem with your mouse with Win
XP. If you are using an older version of the Microsoft Optical Intellimouse
that is your problem. You need the 3.0 version for it to work without
problems. I know, Microsoft doesn't support its own mouse. But to be fair,
if you call them up and explain your problem, the mouse has a lifetime
guarrantee and they will replace it.
