It doesn't matter what I am doing it just happens on a whim. Once it goes
diagonal I cant do anything and I have to shutdown and restart. I have
scanned for viruses, did a system recovery, changed monitors, and checked the
CPU. I am at a loss as to why it is happening.

Hi Naomi,

Have you tried updating your video drivers?

It could be a video card failure. There were a number of Nvidia products
with an underfill problem. You might want to check any forums that
discuss your brand/model of computer, and see if others have the same
symptoms. Nvidia has set aside about $200million to cover the
costs of repairing the issues caused.

Booting an alternate OS, might tell you whether the problem
was related to a driver or not. If Linux screens have the
same problems as Windows screens, then you'd suspect a hardware
problem. My favorite distro for this, is Knoppix, as so far
it has the best record of booting on various computers
here. But that would be a pretty big download (700MB minimum).
I found a smaller distro, but it wouldn't boot on
my current machine.

Have you checked your video card GPU temperatures. It
definitely sounds like a hardware problem. It could be in
the GPU or VRAM.
