My daughter's laptop has gone sideways - the desktop background and all
prgrammes appear horizontally amd not veretically.

Can anyone tell me how to get things back to normal?

Use the Alt key plus the Up arrow. Or look in the Display applet for
Rotation settings.

Maybe she has accidentally pressed a hotkey to rotate the screen (some video card drivers include that option).

Open Display Properties (it is a Control Panel item), click Settings, Advanced and check each tab your video card driver put there (you'll indentify them by the manufacturer name: ATI, NVIDIA or similar and the word 'Rotate' or similar). I recommend that you disable that hotkeys to avoid the problem in the future.
