Screen color changes automatically

Windows XP. About 30 seconds after boot up, screen goes blank then returns
with color setting different. Immediately after boot, the screen color
setting in screen properties is High (24 bit). After the auto change (screen
blanking), the color is set at Low (8 bit).

During shut down, the screen blanks out again and the color setting goes
back to 24 bit.

I think this started happening after my daughter down-loaded games from
RealArcade. RealArcade's site announces that some of its games play at a
lower color setting but indicate that the switch is made only when the game
is started.

I've deleted everything related to RealArcade but I'm still having the
problem.

I'm guessing that there is some "timed" procedure set to go off x seconds
after boot.

Any ideas?

The fact that the change only happens when you're booting up or shutting-down
suggests that there is still a program that turns on (after boot up) and then
is terminated by Windows at shutdown. Or the settings from RealArcade have
lingered around on your default video program. (such as ATi Control
Panel/Smart, or NVidia Desktop...) Look at the settings for your default
video program, or download the latest version of it and install the new one.

If that don't solve your problem then another program is causing your
misery. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up the Task Manager, click the
Processes tab, and look for anything that you don't recognize. If you don't
recognize any of the program listed. Click start, search, 'For files &
Folders', then start searching for every program you see.(hehehehe) Then look
at the properties of all programs not in the directory
'C:\Windows\system32\'.
Good hunting!

Sorry Paul, I ended my first reply prematurely.
If you find a program the looks like it is messing with you video settings,
stop it from starting by going to Start, run, type 'msconfig.exe', then go to
the Startup tab, and look for that program, then uncheck it's box. Restart.
If THAT don't help then I'm sorry I wasted your time.
