A message is displayed in the lower right hand corner of my opening
(desktop) screen, above the taskbar.
The message is:

"Windows XP Home Edition
Build 2600.xpsp2_rtm.040803-2158 (Service Pack 2)"

How do I get rid of this display?

The easiest way to get rid of this information is with the TweakUI Power Toy
from Microsoft. You can find details on the issue here:
