My XP Home Edition is unable to see my school's network when I try Map
Network Drive. I can connect to internet by using school's connection.
Someone told me I need XP pro. Any idea?

Are you looking directly under My Network Places, or did you look under My
Network Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - (Workgroup Name)?

Might be a browser problem.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

I got following message from Browstat

Status for domain X on transport \Device\NwlnkNb
Browsing is active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus. Using \\BLABLA
Master browser is running build 2600

domain X is my workgroup and BLABLA is my computer name. If I change my
workgroup and computer name in the System Properties then above message will
change too. Is this suppose to happen. I am confused. I can see other
student's computers on the network. I just don't see servers that has my
assignments on it. I can find assignment servers by using library's computer
and they are using xp pro.

following is the complete message:

Is the school's network a peer-to-peer workgroup or a domain?

Windows XP Home Edition can't join domains, only workgroups.

However, check out this page:

How does your computer connect to the school network? I wonder if you're in the
same network as the library computers. If I were a network admin, I would
certainly setup 2 (or 3, or 4) separate networks.
1) School administrative.
2) School public access (ie library).
3) Guest public (ie students).
4) Guest trusted public (ie teachers).

Has the school provided any instructions for using the school network? Does the
school tell you that you should be able to access assignment servers from your
personal computer? Is there a school tech assistant to help you?

Do "ipconfig /all" on your computer, when connected (as it is now). Do
"ipconfig /all" from the library computer. Let's take a look at the
differences.

I'd be surprised if you could run browstat on the library computer, but it would
be interesting if your could.
