scheduled defrag problems

When running defrag you must make sure that all
applications are shut down properly. This includes
everything in the task bar and most of the processes.
The only processes that you must have running are
rundll32.exe, explore.exe and ctfmon.exe. The possible
reason for defrag stopping after it has examined the disk
is that all these app's and processes continue to write
to the disk and defrag can not organise all the files.
Hope this helps

While this advice may have been true for Windows 95/98/Me, it is no
longer a necessity in Windows XP to shut down everything before
running a defrag. Disk Defragmenter is designed to run while other
apps are up and running.

Granted, a number of people have seen better results going into Safe
Mode prior to running the built-in defragger, but saying things *must*
be shut down is incorrect.

I hoe this helps -
