scanreg

Thanks. Someone was playing around with the registry and
deleted "something" about exe and system restore didn't
work, nor did help center or anything else with an exe
extension.

I found a fix from Doug Knox(I think that's his name)and
had him merge the reg file and now his exe files work
again.

I was thinking that scanreg /restore would have been a
quick way to solve this particular issue. Probably a one
in a million shot that someone would find a way to mess up
the one registry entry that would prevent system restore
from functioning.

Yes - and many of us regret its passing. But System restore is more
comprehensive, in that it puts back not just the registry, but also
restores system files to a consistent state.

It sounds as if you had broken the file association for .exe files,
which is why SR would not run. Should this ever happen again, go to
Start - Run and run
C:\Windows\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe
explicitly - that will avoid invoking the association

Hi Alex,

Invoking the command directly also looks for .exe and exefile associations. Only method which I can think of is to rename an .exe to ..com and run it.
