I have tried scanreg /opt /fix on my '98 system but it appears to
hang. Is there another option that does the same thing(s) please ?

Regards, John.

Try running scanreg /fix first
then scanreg /opt

I tried opt first and that seemed to work. Fix didn't. I doubt it
would work the other way around. Though I might try that later today.

Apparently this sort of thing is called a "registry defragmenter" or
"registry compressor".

I cannot find however any freeware program that does this. At least
on a '98 system. :-(

Looks like it should be on Susan's "Wanted freeware" list.

Regards, John.

Scanreg /fix corrects erroneous entries and completely rebuilds the
registry. If your registry contains many errors, is large, or your
machine is slow, it can take a while to finish the job and that could
give the appearance that it is hung. Scanreg /fix does not eliminate
orpan entries left by uninstalled programs.

Scanreg /opt removes unused spaces and blank lines. As such it can
reduce the registry's file size.

Scanreg /fix should always be run before scanreg /opt, if you are
running both.

I use them on a 98se box, with no problems.
