When you scan something in, what you have is a picture of it on your
computer. If you put a picture of a refrigerator on your computer you
couldn't move the shelves around or adjust the temperature in the
refrigerator, but it would look like a refrigerator. You need a separate
piece of software, that usually comes with scanners, to turn the pictures of
words and paragraphs into actual text that can be manipulated on your
computer screen. This software is called OCR (optical character
recognition). It is seldom that scanning a form and converting it into Word
saves time over retyping the form in Word.
What you may be talking about - looking for - is what Word calls an "online
