Does anyone know if it is possible to share 1 scanner on a home network (2
computers) or if there is a freeware program that will let you do it.

oldfart.

Some HP Scanners have come with this kind of software. There are also
commercial programs like Perfectscan:
http://www.recogniform.com/scanning.htm (199 euros) which do this job. Don't
know of a freeware program, but would sure like to see one.

Depends on the scanner. Most of them can't be accessed on the network
- they need physical connection to the computer. The hardware that
will allow you to remotely switch a hardware switch is more expensive
than a cheap HP printer/scanner. Network-capable scanners aren't
cheap.

What is this scanner was a USB scanner. That is, the only connection to
the computer was a USB port. Would that make this sharing more viable?

Hi oldfart,

unfortunately I know only of a shareware program named Capturix ScanShare
(Link not provided because you look for Freeware ;-)). At least is't a
little bit cheaper than Perfectscan (59$/99$ for standard/professional
license). IMHA still to expensive. And judging from the trial you have
limited options how to scan and what format to save.

I heard that there is a driver or software for linux, with which you can
make avaiable the USB-Port over Intranet or Internet. Maybe you want to
check if there is a Windows version of that.

Last solution but also non-free is a hardware USB-hub like Ubox UBX4100
(www.lantronix.com) or AnywhereUSB/5 (www.ionetworks.com), reviewed in the
last edition of the German computer magazine c't.

That's not exactly what you were looking for, but maybe it's useful for you
anyway. I wish you good luck.

Denis

I'm running XP Pro and my scanner is a canon Lide 80 (USB) The 2 computers
are connected by cable via LAN network cards, I have the printer shared (no
problems) which is connected to my computer and I would like the scanner to
be shared as well, I have looked just about all places I can find, and no
answers so far if it is possible, so I guess it isn't, I have been trying
to find an email address, or a way to contact Canon other than ring them
long distance, and can't find an email address for them , their web site is
usless for this.
Thanks all for trying, and if I am in the big city where they have an
office I sure will call in and let them know just how good their web site
is for communication with them.

Is sharing the Scan Folder out of the question? If it is then look for
the $ware solution ($40).

Just had a look at remote scann looks good but for $70 I would rather buy a
second scanner, they have to be kidding charging that much.

I was just thinking if, I had or could get a double adapter for the USB
port on the scanner, and another scanner cable and hook it up to the other
computer and install the scanner software that came with the scanner on the
other computer if that would work. any ideas if it would work anyone???

Well, this would be a cheap option. Much cheaper than that $70. Give it
a shot. It'd save many people's grief.

Or maybe a USB Switch.
