Scanner Troubles

I have been having lots of trouble trying to install my scanner (HP ScanJet 3400C) using Windows XP. Windows XP will not recognize the driver for the scanner. I have go to the HP website and downloaded the software that is compatible with XP but it still will not work. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks!

Be sure to remove any instance of the scanner now in device
manager, then install the XP driver/software you download
from HP, Install the software and then plug the scanner in.
