Scanner problems

I just received a reconstructed Dell CPU with windows XP
professional operating system. I have a Brother MFC and
I cannot use my scanning function. The MFC manual said
it was not compatible with XP is there any way I can fix
this problem short of buying a new printer? IT prints,
and faxes fine, I need to use my scanner. Any suggestions?
