ScanDisk

Is there no ScanDisk program in Windows XP? I'm often
told to use it but it isn't there. I would appreciate a
little help on this. Thanks...

It's called chkdsk, type it in help. If you had typed scandisk help would have told you to use chkdsk.

You may also use "Error-checking", similar to Scandisk

Hi David, I have been curious as to if you should run this after an improper
shutdown, or does XP handle that better than previous OS's?

-If it needs to run it will run. Most times it doesn't need to run if the format is NTFS as NTFS is somewhat self repairing, with Fat32 it will need to run to fix the recorded free space on the disk.
