What happened to Scandisk in XP Prof????

Don't we need to check disks - eg floppies - any more? Or is it called
something else?

(Needed to check some floppies - used the W89SE PC instead of this one.
What am I missing??)

Hi Richard

Please qualify 'several little items' & 'been moved just to inconvenience people'. It is a lot easier to get around XP than it ever was in W98 :-))

Bwahahahahaha! No, it was your imagination that inconveniences your gormless brain!
Actually it probably just seems like that because XP is jsut a super tweaked
NT4.0 ...with W2k in between .....

Bwahahahahahahahaha! *snort, chortle, choke*

Greetings --

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.
Additionally, as the NTFS file system is less prone to errors than is
Win9x's FAT32 file system, the Chkdsk utility won't need to be used
"routinely."

Double-click My Computer > right-click the desired hard drive >
Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will run Chkdsk,
WinXP's equivalent of Scandisk, on the next reboot.

Why do you parrot this off as fact? The "pretty picture" is only there, if one wants to see it running as an option. You obviously know nothing about 98/ME!

It is called Check Disk in Windows 98 and upward.
To run it (chkdsk /f): My Computer/right click the disk you want
checked/Properties/Tools tab/under Error Checking, click Check Now/Select
"Y".
Actually under Properties (if you are checking a hard drive), you should: 1.
Under the General Tab, execute the Disk Cleanup tool. 2. Under the Tools
Tab, execute the Check Disk function; then the Defragmentation function. Run
all of these functions in that exact order.
To find out all you can do with Check Disk tool, go to Start/Run/type in
"chkdsk /?" for information on other parameters you can choose to execute.
For example if you are having problems with a Hard Drive, You might choose
to execute "chkdsk /r" but it takes longer to run.
