Scandisc runs on startup occasionally

My system has developed an odd problem over the last few months - every now
and then when I boot it up, Scandisc comes up with the "one of your discs
needs to be checked" bit. It then scans C: and always finds no problem.

It will happen maybe once or twice a week, and has been hard to associate with
anything but I'm now starting to believe it is related to the amount of
"activity" the system has been previously put through.

I'm starting to see it more frequently if I have been playing 3d games rather
than just doing windowsy things (web surfing, s/w development etc) but not
exculsively. I've also been through several versions of display driver (Radeon
9600 Pro) but the problem remains.

I think I'm also starting to see longer shutdown periods prior to the
subsequent boot-with-scandisc - maybe something here is failing to set the
"shutdown completed" flag.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to go about diagnosing this better?
It's difficult to try specific things given the sporadic nature, but at the
moment I have no clues...

Cheers

Well, there are only two reasons that I can think of that would cause
Scandisc to run at startup. First is that your computer did not shut
down properly. The second is that your computer has that event schedules
to happen. Check Start-Control Panel-Scheduled Tasks. On to the first
one, the computer may not be shutting down properly because an error
occurs while trying to close a program or the power just cuts out.

Check your computer for viruses, malware, etc., to make sure nothing
like that is preventing a proper shutdown. Try defragmenting your
harddrive (just for good measure). Finally, try using Hibernate instead
of Shutdown and see how that works for you :)

Hi Nathan,

There's nothing scheduled to run, and it's all malware squeaky clean (I keep a
close eye on this sort of stuff)

It all reminds me of the "fast shutdown" problem in windows 98 that happened
with certain fast hard disks - that was a problem until a patch for the
O/S came out....

I don't have the option to hibernate.... it's never been enabled....
