It would appear to me having studied the log files that a missed scan is run
automatically at the first start up 48 hours after the previous scan has
been performed, if automatic scans are enabled. The scan starts 15 minutes
after you start (or login in, presumably).
As part of the process WD looks for updates which is why some users might
have had them downloaded "automatically" rather than being advised of them
through Windows Update.
