Oops..,

Search finds SCANDISK.INI in windows/command.

SCANDISK.EXE is in an EBD Cabinet file.

It turns out that XP uses checkdisk in the
properties>tools for a disk drive.

Scandisk is a 16 bit application, and can't touch the
hard drives while XP is running.

If you want to check your disks for file errors or for
surface defects, checkdisk on the properties page of a
diskdrive works fine. ON your C: drive it might schedule
the operation for the next bootup because it has to have
access to all the disk and XP won't let it. (I think you
might get it to run in safe mode though.)

Greetings --

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.

Start > Run > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and available
options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.
