While attempting to run "thorough" scan disk, I receive
the message - Scan Disk has had to restart 10 times
because Windows or another program is writing to this
drive. I have no other applications running, how do I get
around this?

In Windows XP, scandisk has been replaced by Disk Error Checking (known also
as chkdsk), which does not have a 'thorough' option. If you are using
Windows XP, here is how to perform Disk Error Checking:

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk drive that
you want to check.
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
4. Click Start
