saving vhs video to file and replaying

I have got a fly2000 video capture (cheap crap) card but when I record or save file to hard drive and then play with RealPlayer or Win MediaPlayer I only get a short clip even though the file that was recorded is quite large
Any Idea what the problem is
I woyld like to save some of my old VHS tapes to computer then to DVD if possible

What format does the capture card save in?
