Saving plain text without .txt and I don't want to put quotes around file name

I recently upgrade my hardware and on my old computer I was able to save plain text files in Word without the txt extension being added. The old system is Windows 2000 and Word 97 and the new system is XP pro with Word 2003. I tried loading Windows 2000 and Word 97 and I get the same result, .txt added to all my file names. I have searched the Word settings and the registry on the old computer with no luck. I know putting quotes around my file name will do the trick but it is frustrating since I didn't have to do that on my old computer.

Windows uses the filename extensions to determine application compatibility,
so why would you want to leave them off?
You don't have to display them. You can change the display setting in
Windows Explorer > tools > folder options > view.

Because the file name needs to have a different extension so I open in another program by double clicking on the file. I'm only using word for the mail merge function.
