Is there a way to select compression options for saving (or printing) a pdf
from ppt? I am working in Powerpoint 2004 for the Mac.

Print to a file, then distill the file. Distiller has all the compression
options.

If you're using Acrobat, you should be able to set the Distiller settings it
uses. ISTR that there's a way to change the settings for MacOSX's built in PDF
making software, but it's not available on my earlier version of OSX.

A quick google turned this up:

"About Mac OS X PDF files
Mac OS X creates a “digital master” PDF file, which includes full resolution
images and each font character used in the document. These files are
device-independent and can be shared with other users, viewed in Mail or
Safari, and Preview. To tailor PDF files for specific purposes, you can use
Quartz Filters, available from the Print menu or in the ColorSync Utility
Application."
