Saving JPG converts to bmp in XP pro

I'm having a problem saving JPG files in my XP Pro PC.
Each time I try the JPG's convert to BMP. Is there a way
to stop this? (ie downloading a JPG file so it stays a
JPG file)It has only started to occur recently and I
don't know why.
