when i try to save from word 2003 to floppy disk i get these 2 errors 1) no
id address mark was found on the floppy disk 2) you do not have access to the
folder 'A:\'. see your administrator for access to this folder. I own this
computer and i don't understand what it's asking for, i am the administrator.
PLEASE HELP!!! desperate to get my college work turned in, Sherry

Saving to (or opening from) floppy is the most certain method of corrupting
your document. Never do this! Paul has indicated the correct method.

I have had success with saving to my 'flash drive'. I know about the
difficulties re: floppies. Can the same problems occur with 'flash
drives'?

Just curious.

The problems revolve around the temporary files Word creates in the working
folder, the number and size of which cannot be predetermined. Clearly the
problem is less with much larger receptacles than floppy disc, but it exists
all the same. CD drives provide even more problems and should not be used,
but for most of the time you would get away with using flash drives and/or
zip drives. Nevertheless, it is always better to save to the hard drive and
copy files to removable media.

I have been moving about 50 megs of Word files back and forth from work to
home every day now for well over a year on a 128 meg USB drive, and have not
had a single problem.....yet.

I note that you have been "moving" filesback and forth on a removable
drive, not wqorking on them. One shouldn't expect catastrophe unless
the files are accessed from the ZIP drive. Moving them and then
copying them to a hard drive for access is all right.
Blessed be, for sure...

Yep. I've encountered a corrupt Word document when editing it directly
off a USB drive. I had previously tested the stability on unimportant
files but as luck would have it I lost an important document.

If you insist on editing files directly then I suggest you follow
these guidelines:
- Under Tools/Options/Save turn on "Make local copies of files stored
on network or removable drives"
- Always exit Word prior to removing the drive
- Always use the "Safely remove hardware" option

I can't guarantee you won't encounter corrupt files if you follow the
above guidelines but they will help decrease your chances.

Good point. I do not work on the files from the USB drive. Instead, I copy
them to the hard drive and then copy them back to the USB.
