Saving Emails to CD

Which Email client are you using ? Outlook, Outlook Express
or another client.

Do you wish to save them as individual messages or just the
folders for backup purposes or to transfer to another PC ?

Outlook mail is stored in a .Pst file and older mail will be stored
in a Archive.Pst file.Outlook Express stores them in .Dbx files.

Hi,

Just for your reference,

You can first save emails to a local folder with the default file format
(such as .eml for OE, .msg for Outlook) or any supported format of your
email client (such as .txt, .htm), and then use a CD burning software, such
as Nero Express, for putting saved emails into a CD.

PS: Assuming you're using email clients as mentioned and not using Web mail
such as MSN Explorer.

Hope this helps.

Hi

As I read those links, these allow you to backup OE, but is there a way to
'move' messages stored in OE6 on one PC to an OE folder on another PC
(without "forwarding" them by internet which would change the name of the
senders)?

Yes.if you follow the instructions here, you can burn the backed up files to
a CD, or copy to a floppy if they will fit, and then restore them on the
other machine.

How to Backup-Import or Transfer messages

The KB article below will explain how to import all the files. Follow all
instructions carefully.

Hi Jan,

It's my fault for not being clear.

What I need to do is to import only some messages from one PC's OE to
another PC's OE which already has its own messages. That is, I want to
merge the new messages without replacing what is already on that PC's OE.

I've tried doing this in the past by
1. putting the messages I want to transfer from PC 1 into a new OE folder.
2. copying the dbx file for that new transfer folder to the other computer
PC 2.
3. only to find that OE will not recognize the new transfer folder in the
second PC (PC 2)

It is straightforward to export all messages and then import them into the
2nd OE thus creating a clone. But I cannot seem to copy just a new folder
to the 2nd PC's OE.

Any ideas?

Create the newly named (Transfer) folder on your destination PC.
Then after the folder (Matching Name) is created, replace the .dbx
from the originating PC.

I thin k I tried that once and it did not work. The new folder consistently
opened as empty. But I will try again. Thanks.

Hi,

There are many ways but I recently decided to invest in the following
software for porting all messages (including newsgroups - which is the
primary reason) from the old system to a newly installed system. I am very
pleased for the ease of use and the results.

Software name: Outlook Express Backup at: http://www.genie-soft.com/

Note: You could download the trial version first, and please noted that I am
just a user and has no relations in any ways with the company and certainly
will not be responsible for the quality of its product :)

Hope this helps.

Actually, I did it without im porting the folder.

Here is what I did:
1. created a folder with the same name in the recieving PC's OE.
2. copied a message fromm another folder to the new folder (this is
important)
3. closed this OE (Important)

4. Then copied the new DBX file from the "sending" PC to the storage
directory of the recieving PC and said "yes" to replacing the existing file.
5. Opened OE6 and there were all my messages safely in the new folder.
