You could run the edit on Kelly's site:

Line 188: Add Save & Restore Desktop Layout to Menu
See the top of the page for info on running the edit.
This will add two options to the right click on a blank area of the desktop
context menu, Save desktop layout and restore desktop layout.

I used Desktop Save And Restore for years on Win98SE and I've installed
in on XP but never used the Restore function although it's supposed to work.

There are several third-party freeware programs to do this. A google search
will give you several choices.

There is a free program called "Iconoid" that will save you desktop
icons in their relative positions. I don't have the link, but a
google search should find it.
