Regardless of size, DVD requires the MPEG-2 format. If
your file conversion software (I do mine in Ulead Video
Studio) allows you to customize the bitrate, around 3,200
to 3,500 Kbps should create an MPEG file out of a 2 1/2-
hour movie which will fit on a disk. (The file plus menu
total must be less than 4.3 GB.) At this bitrate, my
guess is that the quality will be good enough except in
fast-action scenes. If it isn't good enough for you, you
can always split it over two disks.
My advise would be to experiment with short video clips,
trying various bitrates and etc. That way you'll know the
limits and abilities of your system and should have a
fair idea of what to expect before pouring so much time
into a project.

I have a 2 1/2 hour movie that I need to save and burn
onto a DVD. I started to save my file last night and
today (19 hours later) it was only 68% completed (that is
where it was 8 hours into it). I have noticed that I
should save it in DVD-AVI format but that means the file
size is going to be around 34 GB. I want this video to
be saved in the best quality but I'm afraid that it's
file size is not going to fit on a DVD and then I am
going to have to go back to editing it into 2 videos. I
need some advice on what I should do. Please let me know.
