I don't like the idea of having that personally-created data in a single
place, whether internal or external.

If I were in your shoes, I would keep my personal data on C:, and use that
external drive for backup.

I think you need to consider real backups to reliable and tested media.
Consider a set of DVD/RW or CD/RW disks. And, once you have the base
install, create an image of the system using something like Acronis
TrueImage.

Keep in mind that some email programs, like both Outlook and Outlook Express
(and Windows Address Book) helpfully file the message stores in directories
marked hidden, so that by default, you can't just go and find them.

thanks for correcting me..........am i to post to ONLY one group at a
time?

No, it's fine to post to (a few) multiple groups, but do it by
*crossposting*, not multiposting. Here's my standard post on this subject:

Please do not send the same message separately to more than one newsgroup
(called multiposting). Doing so just fragments the thread, so someone who
answers in one newsgroup doesn't get to see answers from others in another
newsgroup. And for those who read all the newsgroups the message is
multiposted to, they see the message multiple times instead of once (they
would see it only once if you correctly crossposted instead). This wastes
everyone's time, and gets you poorer help than you should get.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please do so
by crossposting (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Please see "What is the accepted way to share a message across multiple
newsgroups?" at http://smjg.port5.com/faqs/usenet/xpost.html\
