Saved emails should keep the names of files removed from them.

We have finite space on our fileserver and often must remove large
attachments from emails. Usually I must save the email itself because it is
part of ongoing work, or because the information in it is important to keep.
Having removed attachments, I lose the record of what attachment came with
which email; but ideally, I need to have that record. Sometimes it is very
important: especially for legal docs relating to litigation. To reiterate: I
need to remember what attachment was on an email even though I removed it
(and saved it elsewhere).

If HTML is your message format, then with the email open, click on edit and
edit message. Then click on Format and change it to plain text. Again click
on edit and edit message, back to format and change it to Rich Text and then
save your message. It will show the name of the file attached. Hope this
helps.

Here's a link to an Outlook add-in that may be of interest to you. It's capable
of removing attachments and optionally provide a link to it.

Here are some excerpts from this website:

From Features:

a.. Removes attachments. Links messages to the removed attachments without
losing the attachment indicator (paper clip).

From User's Guide:

Save Attachments dialog:

a.. Leave a link to the detached files - EZDetach will create a link to the
saved and removed attachments. The links look very similar to the attachments,
however the names are prefixed with "LinkTo_", and sizes are much smaller.
(Compare message sizes before and after).

"Display Link Info" Command

If you use EZDetach to remove attachments from messages and leave links to
ezdetached files in messages, you can use the Tools -> EZDetach -> Display Link
Info menu command to see where the links point to.

Very impressive!
