Save verification

How can I tell simply by looking at the Word screen
whether a file has been saved? WordPerfect
displays "unmodified"; other apps grey-out the "FileSave"
icon. But Word seems to show nothing? What am I missing?
My alternative to a visual cue is to save the file
obsessively. Thanks.

I agree it would be helpful to have some visual cue, but it won't hurt to
"save obsessively" because when you click Save or press Ctrl+S, Word does
not actually save the document unless it is "dirty."

Suzanne,
From my perspective, you walk on water, since your advice
to me several days ago about putting a box in a header
got me out of a LOT of trouble when I was assembling a
PDF for a client. Now, having thus declared my vast and
perhaps even endless appreciation for you, I must say
that your response about Word's lacking a "verification
of Save" feature is less than comforting. In the Better
Old Days, before Word took over the world, I would
constantly glance up at random intervals to my
WordPerfect screen simply to verify whether I had saved
my document. It was sort of like hearing a husband or
wife say "I love you." Maybe not absolutely necessary at
any given moment, but really, really nice to know if you
happen to be wondering. It's a mystery to me why the MS
programmers don't include this basic feature. John

I agree it would be helpful, but it can be very unnerving at first if you're
not used to it. When I first started using CorelFLOW, I didn't realize that
the Save button was disabled if the document wasn't dirty. I really
panicked, thinking I couldn't save my file. Then I saw that as soon as I
made some more changes, it was enabled again. I don't know which sort of
signal--wording in the title bar or the state of the Save button--would be
easier for the developers to implement, but either would be welcome.

This is one feature that I too would like Microsoft to add. Some
applications put an asterisk after the filename in the title bar when the
document is 'dirty'. For me that would be the simplest and most easily
visible approach. However, like you, I am in the habit of saving regularly.

The asterisk would work for me, too.
