What am I supposed to do with the following message? It is nice to know that
my web service is running. I just wish I could publish to it!

--------------------------------------------------

Your Web service is now running.

You do not currently have a default Web page established for your users. Any
users attempting to connect to your Web site from another machine are
currently receiving an Under Construction page. Your Web server lists the
following files as possible default Web pages:
default.htm,default.asp,index.htm,iisstart.asp. Currently, only iisstart.asp
exists.

To add documents to your default Web site, save files in
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\.

Did you actually create a web before publishing?
Do you have a default home page as required by your host as outlined in the
message? You need to check with them to see what is required.,

I can publish fine remotely where I pay and know what my host requires. It
is on my laptop used solely by me that I am struggling with and trying to
figure out what has changed. I can publish to My Webs in My Documents and
preview it in my browser. But I cannot publish to localhost. What has
"them" Microsoft changed? This just happened in the last week and
reinstalling Windows, IIS, FPSE did not change it although I must admit I am
not having the terrible disonnection problems with my ISP like I did.

If it were not for you MS-MVPs and your help I would have given up on these
computers a long time ago :) !

The message is what I get when I open http://localhost while logged on as
administrator.

You need to have a home page named, default.htm in localhost.

I copied and pasted my website into wwwroot. I can bring up the website in
IE by http://localhost/eastern but I cannot Publish to it in FrontPage. It
does not find the website and asks me if I want to create one and I reply
yes then it bounces me back to the remote properties page.

I think it is that "folder is not accessible" thing again.

I can use the file system and "browse" to location in wwwroot and publish,
but that is like it is not a server. The main reason I purchased XP Pro was
for the server and now I cannot figure out how to set the thing up. It was
not this difficult last year!

You should not be copying anything into localhost (or IIS)
- especially a FP disc based web from a folder
(which will usually bring the FP disc based web meta data along - making the server based web inaccessible)
You should be publishing to it from Disc based to server based

Try a clean start
In Windows Control Panel Add Remove Program uninstall the FP SE (if there) and in Windows Components remove IIS - restart your PC
Then in Windows Control Panel Add Remove Program in Windows Components add IIS (unselect the FP 2000 SE in Details)
Then install the FP 2002 SE (see below)
Open IIS (Start Administrative Tools IIS (or Start Programs Administrative Tools - IIS)
- stop and restart your IIS server
Select the root web and you should have tasks to check the FP 2002 SE (or properties to access the FP 2002 SE)
In FP use File Open Site (and enter http://localhost/)
Use Tools Server Admin (create a subweb - say eastern) & close the FP SE admin page
In your root web in FP run a tools recalculate hyperlinks
(you should see the new subweb and be able to double click it to open it in FP)
If using FP 2003 select the Remote Site tab and set it's properties to a file based location (browse to your disc based web) and
publish from Remote to local

Why does it say copy???? and then why under publish does it keep referring
to ftp??? I want to publish to localhost!
********************************************************************************************
Quick Site Setup with IIS

IIS creates a default Web site and FTP site when you install Windows XP
Professional. This topic describes how to publish information on these
default sites.

To publish content on your Web site

1. Create a home page for your Web site. See Choosing an
Authoring Tool for more information on available tools used in Web site
creation.

2. Name your home page file Default.htm or Default.asp.

3. Copy your home page into the default Web publishing
directory for IIS. The default Web publishing directory is also called the
home directory, and the location provided by Setup is \Inetpub\Wwwroot.

4. If your network has a name resolution system (typically
DNS), then visitors can simply type your computer name in the address bar of
their browsers to reach your site. If your network does not have a name
resolution system, visitors must type the numerical IP address of your
computer. For more information, see About Name Resolution.

To publish content on your FTP site

1. Copy or move your files into the default FTP publishing
directory. The default directory provided by Setup is \Inetpub\Ftproot.

2. If your network has a name resolution system (typically
DNS), then visitors can type ftp:// followed by your computer name in the
address bar of their browsers to reach your site. If your network does not
have a name resolution system, visitors must type ftp:// and the numerical
IP address of your computer. To customize the appearance of your FTP site,
see Setting FTP Messages and Directory Output Style.

Ok... I am a bit confused here. Are you trying to publish from your remote
site to your computer?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have some webs that I have in My Documents. This is from the CD that I
made before I formatted HD to reinstall XP Pro. I am just trying to set up
the web server so I can take advantage of FP extensions before I publish to
the www. I have reinstalled Windows XP becuase week ago I was having
problems with "folder not being accessible". I thought if I reinstalled XP
Pro, everything would clear up like when I messed up the extensions last
year. But things have changed. I don't know what I have missed.

Stumped Susan!

I need help with your directions please! I am extremely weak in the IIS
stuff. I did open IIS but did not know how to stop and restart your IIS
server via any menu but had to use DOS to use iisreset computername /stop
and /start which appeared to work.
Please explain the next step
How do I select the root web, etc

Thanks,
Susan

I guess I am not sure why you want to set up a local server. If you have the
full directories on CD, just open them with FP and publish them to your hard
drive. Just open FP, make a new empty web, and publish to that from the CD.
From that you can edit and publish to the remote site.

Or am I missing something here?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those instructions presume you are Not running the FP SE, but just a localhost site
- you don't need a FTP server, ignore the instructions (and remove it from your IIS details)

I am logged on as Administrator but when I try to check the FP 2002
extensions, I get the "You are not authorized to view this page". I tried
KB 321488 but now get User name and Password box. Don't know what to do now.
In past I did not have passwords set up for laptop am I being forced to do
it now with Microsoft Security changes?

I thank you for all your help. I am going to have fun, reinstall Windows XP
Pro again, forget the MS security updates (for now), and use the FP
extensions exe that I used back in December (it did not change or at least
they did not change the version number) and see if I can get this to work!

I am convinced that the problem is related to some change Microsoft made!

If you are going to do a re-install, then install IIS with the extensions from the Windows XP Pro
CD, these are the FP2000 extensions and will work just fine with FP2002 or FP2003.

Then install all Windows XP updates, SP1, SP1a, except SP2, then once you know that everything is
working correctly, you can then upgrade to the FP2002 extensions and then apply Windows XP SP2
